Earlier this year, my friend Jeff Hall and I launched a Kickstarter campaign for a book about building 3D dungeons for role-playing games. Its focus was a little scattered, and the format wasn’t quite right for the market. We had a good response to the campaign, but some wonderful feedback from backers and others helped us see that we should step back and re-evaluate what we could do.

And so, on October 25th, we are launching a Kickstarter campaign for The Tremendous Tome of EPIC Dungeons!

This book is focused on presenting the creative works of almost 20 tabletop builders/crafters from around the world, showcasing epic dungeons that they have built (or are building at the moment). The campaign will be all about funding this physical book (144-pages, hardback, faux-leather-look cover with gold foil) and sharing immersive photos and text about these exciting and inspiring builds.

The campaign will run for 16 days, and feature straightforward pledge levels for the PDF version, the physical version, or the physical and PDF versions. We are particularly excited to be working with wonderful manufacturers like Dwarven Forge, Monster Fight Club, Steve Jackson Games, and Printable Scenery, as well as exciting creators like Todd Putnam (from the D&D Creative Table Designs Facebook group), plus Black Magic Craft, Real Terrain Hobbies, and RP Archive from YouTube, plus @horcharr, @npc_creations, @oldskoolcreative, and @picassawi from Instagram! No doubt more awesome artists will be joining us along the way!

We’ll be showing off huge builds, detailed builds, builds that are outside of the box, but the regardless of the scope of the projects, each build will have something exciting to inspire everyone interested in Fantasy gaming!

With the first three volumes now delivered into the hands of excited backers around the world, and the books about to go on sale in retailers (just a week or two away) I am very excited to start talking about the next three volumes of THE ART OF…!

In May, we’ll be bringing the next three volumes to Kickstarter in what we’re expecting will be a roughly three-week campaign. We’ve gathered another three wonderful artists, each with a different approach to their miniatures art, and they’ll each have an opportunity to talk about their art in their own way.

THE ART OF… Tommie Soule

The next artist we are featuring is Tommie Soule. Tommie has been painting for a long time now, and has also been teaching students about miniatures painting for what feels like almost as long. I remember Tommie being one of the first artists to set-up the two-day/weekend courses all those years ago! This volume is very definitely going to take a deep dive into the very essence of painting miniatures and strip away the jargon and mystery that we can sometimes find ourselves surrounded by. By breaking things down to their core concepts, our understanding can be rebuilt and show us that “techniques” we thought unattainable are certainly within our grasp.

(One of the best pieces of feedback we’ve received has been the acknowledgement that these aren’t books that follow a formula, or a set of interview questions).

THE ART OF… Chris Suhre

The first artist we are featuring is Chris Suhre. Chris has been involved in gaming for a long time, but has only relatively recently pushed hard into the art of painting miniatures. He has spent a lot of time working on wonderful dioramas and through that explored many aspects of composition, including the physical arrangement of elements in a scene and the use of color to support and enhance the physical components. Chris will talk about the basics and dig deeper into the advanced elements as we take a closer look at many of his award-winning pieces.

Two weeks ago we launched the Kickstarter campaign for The Tremendous Tome project. We had a nice kickoff and first couple of days, and then things started slowing down, despite our promotional efforts and the sharing efforts of our backers. Jeff and I asked them why they thought this might be, and the constructive feedback we received was great. Some suggestions went a little counter to our vision for the book, and it was at this point we realized that we didn’t have the clarity we thought we had, and that we might have misunderstood a few other things about our potential audience.

So, we made the decision to cancel the current Kickstarter campaign for The Tremendous Tome, which we announced today. While this feels disappointing for us (we both don’t like giving up), we also realize that this action is not “giving up” but rather it’s pausing so that we can address any concerns, make positive adjustments, and come back with something better, something with better clarity of purpose. More exciting too. It was an incredibly scary thing to do, but my gut certainly told me it was the right thing.

Thank you to all the wonderful backers that have written messages and comments of support for this move. We will be back later this year with a stronger product to offer you all.

We’re now live on Kickstarter!

Jeff and I have been working away for the last few months – planning, painting, building, writing – and we’re now ready to fund the production of the book and get stuck into the most important part, making it happen!

Happy New Year, everyone. I hope that 2022 will be a much better year for everyone than the last few.

One very happy piece of news is that we are less than a month away from the start of fulfillment for the first edition of THE ART OF… !!! That’s right, all of the books are printed and are being shipped to their various hubs etc. We’re expecting the fulfillment for the UK, Europe, and everywhere except the US to begin in the week of February 7th, and the US fulfillment to begin the week after. I am so very excited!

Here are a number of photos of the books and slipcase samples I received a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to hold off showing them until I knew when we’d be packing and shipping all of the boxes, and I know you’ll love to see them now.

Everything looks great, and I think you’re all going to be very happy reading through these books and getting a deeper understanding of what drives these wonderful artists!

We’re aiming for the start of April for a retail release. In the US, distribution to retailers will be through Alliance Game Distributors and Bridge Distribution, and for the rest of the world it will be through Warlord Games. For online sales you’ll be able to get copies through Ironheart Artisans in the US, and Warlord Games for the rest of the world. Hi-res PDFs will be available through Ironheart Artisans.

Now, on to more Dave Taylor Miniatures projects for 2022.

I’ve almost nailed down the artists for the next edition of THE ART OF… and I’m hoping to be able to announce their names in the next update. The timeframe for the Kickstarter will be similar to last year, with the campaign kicking off in early May and running for three weeks.

BUT before that, I have another publishing project that I’m working on with my friend Jeff Hall. I mentioned it last year, but we are now ready to reveal the launch date of the campaign!

The Tremendous Tome of Decorating Dungeons will be hitting Kickstarter on February 10th this year (just three weeks away!) In the next update I’ll have a link to the “notification page” and we would really appreciate it if you’d be able to share all the info with your roleplaying friends and family. This will be my first time creating a product for the roleplaying market, but Jeff is a veteran DM who has also penned a lot of material for various roleplaying companies. The book will be focused on ways to make the most of your commercially available 3D dungeon terrain and has been a lot of fun to work on!

So, as you can see, things are all go here in the Dave Taylor Miniatures bunker, and we hope that 2022 is “all go” for you too, whatever that may be.
